The 3 Not-So-Obvious Nursery Design Tips

One of the things that excited me during my pregnancy was designing my baby's nursery. My mind was full of theme ideas, colors, and cute baby furniture. I scoured the internet for tips on how to design my dream nursery, and came up with a really good foundation for what I wanted the space to be.

But there were some pieces of information that I couldn't really find on the web. Things I learned as I went through the actual process of decorating the space itself. Below are my tips.

Be mindful of the wall display by your baby's crib.
There are countless photos online of beautiful wall displays right next to the baby crib. The floating shelves, heavy block letters of the baby's name, or the long, stringy wall art — while stunning — are all potential hazards for the baby. If you still want these items in your nursery, consider placing the crib away from them. Or opt for decals or lightweight displays next to the crib instead.

Mobiles don't provide the best sleeping arrangement.
It's also very common to see mobiles being placed above a baby's crib. While it certainly gives them something to look at while they're lying in bed, mobiles can stimulate more than relax. Who wants to get worked up while they're trying to sleep? (Horny you 10 years from now when the kids are older doesn't count). When your baby gets bigger, you'll have to move the mobile anyway because it poses a hazard when your child can grab it and take it down. I placed my baby's mobile above his changing table, which has worked wonders entertaining him while I change his diaper. My lil guy loves getting changed. Luck? I bet not.

If you can afford a pullout sofa bed, it's worth it.
I contemplated keeping my guest bed in the nursery, but it hardly left any space for all of the other room essentials. With a pullout, you can maximize your space and still keep the nursery as a guest room (or a place your SO can sleep in during times he's been a bad, bad boy).

Like my nursery look? Here's how you can make it happen:
